Interests

Dr Giorgia Michelini’s research focuses on neurodivergent conditions (e.g., ADHD) and their common co-occurrence with mental health conditions (e.g., depression and anxiety) in children and young people. Specifically, she studies the biological (e.g. genetic, neural) and environmental factors underlying these conditions, to inform prevention, early identification, and treatment strategies. Her current projects seek to understand why neurodivergent people are at higher risk for experiencing mental health problems across development, and how to best detect and predict mental health problems in this population. Her work integrates approaches from developmental psychopathology, aetiological research (e.g. genetics), transdiagnostic frameworks, and cognitive/affective neuroscience (particularly EEG). She also uses participatory approaches, collaborating closely with the charity sector (e.g., Embracing Complexity, McPin Foundation) and individuals with lived experiences of neurodiversity and mental health challenges to co-produce research projects and increase the impact of her work. At QMUL, she directs the Transdiagnostic Research on Emotion and NeuroDevelopment (TREND) Lab.
