Dr Yuanwei Liu serves as the Rapporteur for the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS) Industrial Specification Group (ISG) work item on “Multi-functional Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RIS): Modelling, Optimisation, and Operation”.

The scope of the work item is to:

• identify technological challenges and summarize technical solutions for Multi-functional Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (MF-RIS) incorporating transmission, reflection, sensing, computation, and other potential functions,
• study channel modelling, coefficient optimization, deployment design, resource allocation and other technical aspects of MF-RIS,
• suggest possible ways of deploying MF-RIS in real-world scenarios and the expected performance enhancement in different scenarios.
