Public Engagement

Members of the Centre for Human-Centred Computing are actively engaged in public engagement activities related to our research activities. The centre is home to world leading Computer Science education, outreach and public engagement and the award winning magazine Computer Science for fun' (CS4FN)

  • Teaching London Computing:  >1.3 million views in 5 years, CS4FN/TLC material translated into 9 languages 
  • @CS4FN - twitter feed with >3500 (mainly teacher) followers. 
  • CS4FN blog (https://cs4fn.blog): 10,000 views in 2023 
  • CS4FN magazines :  21,000 copies per issue delivered to 2,400 educators. 
  • psci-com, Jiscmail's free mailing list for ~4,800 public engagement with science / science communication professionals. 
  • Live events: reaching over 20,000 students engaged through talks, magic shows and science festivals. 
  • Training of teachers:  professional development workshops for over 1000 teachers 

This work has been specially commended by EPSRC and the Royal Society. EdTech 50 named cs4fn and Teaching London Computing named as an exceptional project. Research supported by cs4fn has been selected four times at the Royal Society Summer Exhibition. 
 
The activity is led by Prof Paul Curzon and supported by Jo Brodie. Curzon is a leading UK policy advisor on CS Education and engagement for STEM subjects including as advisor to: the Academic Board of UK National Centre for Computing Education, the Royal Society Computing Education Project, UK Computing at School and BBC Round Table Make it Digital. Curzon has been awarded the IEEE Computer Society Taylor L. Booth Education Award (2020): “For outstanding contributions to the rebirth of computer science as a school subject", was awarded a Higher Education Academy National Teaching Fellowship and was EPSRC Non-professional Computer Science Writer of the Year in 2007.  He has been awarded over £1.5 million in public engagement linked grants since 2008.
