Images of Saturn create new cultural artefacts and public engagement
Professor Murray, a member of our centre, played a crucial role in NASA's Cassini-Huygens probe mission to Saturn as part of the imaging team. He was directly responsible for over 48,000 unique images and shared responsibility for all the images taken during the mission. As the sole member from the UK in the team, Professor Murray acted as the UK's expert on the Cassini probe, providing his insights to both scientific and mainstream media. This enabled the production of accurate and captivating multimedia content that was delivered to millions of people worldwide.
Professor Murray's expertise and images contributed to the creation of new cultural artefacts in art, music, science communication, and entertainment. They also helped to increase public awareness and understanding of science, sparking conversations and debates. Evidence of this is shown by the increased use of online learning resources and higher participation and engagement across news and social media during critical phases of the mission.
