Interests

HG is a bioengineer pioneering the analysis of nanoscale biophysics in the ECM of musculoskeletal tissues, by developing high-brilliance synchrotron X-ray nanomechanical imaging methods. His research has quantified the fundamental hierarchical deformation processes in bone at the Angstrom-micron level, uncovered ultrastructural mechanisms for fragility in osteoporosis models, and developed novel X-ray reconstruction models for complex biological tissues (ORCiD 0000-0003-2201-8933). More recently, his BBSRC (BB/R003610/1) funded research has focused on the mechanics of ageing collagen in cartilage, and he leads an EPSRC consortium (EP/V011235/1) to develop and disseminate TomoSAXS, a novel 3D molecular-to-macro scale biomechanical imaging technology for musculoskeletal tissues.
