Public Engagement

Members of the Centre for Bioengineering  are actively engaged in multiple public engagement activities related to our research activities. Examples of our public engagement work include the following:

Centre of the Cell

Working in partnership with the award winning Centre of the Cell interactive science centre at Queen Mary University of London, our bioengineers have developed various activities and educational resources for young people visiting the Centre. Many of these interactive games have been played by many thousands of school children enabling them explore different aspects of bioengineering from medical implants to tissue engineering. Recent activities include a special hands-on experience for school groups learning about organ-on-a-chip technology.

TV Appearances

Bioengineers from Queen Mary have appeared on various BBC TV shows explaining their research in bioengineering for different audiences. Examples include Prof Hazel Screen's work on tendon biomechanics and organ-on-a-chip tehnology appearing twice on 'Operation Ouch' and Prof Karin Hing's work on bone biomaterials featured on 'Bang Goes the Theory'

Queen Mary's Festival of Communities

The Centre has presented numerous bioengineering interactive hands-on stands at this annual local festival. These include robotics, organ-on-a-chip, 3D printing and neonatal bioengineering.

Royal Mail Stamp

Prof Karin Hing's work on development of bone-graft substitute biomaterials has even featured on a Royal Mail stamp!
